Workshop Schedule

PRE-WORKSHOP EVENTS

Position papers of selected participants (and other pre-workshop materials) will be distributed to participants in advance of the workshop. Also, the final agenda of the workshop will be fine-tuned using the interests and papers of the selected participants.

INTRODUCTION

Time: 9:00 am - 9:30 am

This will include an introduction to the topic, as well as a physical activity such as arm-wrestling between the participants as ice-breaker.

PRESENTATIONS I

Time: 9:30 am - 10:30 am

There will be short presentations by each participant about their view on the topic, as well as a short description of their latest projects.

BREAK

Time: 10:30 am - 11:00 am

PRESENTATIONS II

Time: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The organizers will have grouped the presentations into logical topics and announced the order of presentations in advance of the workshop.

LUNCH

Time: 12:00 pm - 1:45 pm

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY II

Time: 1:45 pm - 2:00 pm

Especially after lunch, another physical group activity such as tug-of-war will help keep the brain focused.

WORKING GROUPS

Time: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Working groups for problem-solution brainstorming. Special attention will be paid to ensure participants will get the chance to interact with everyone, so groups will rotate. (Topics will be adjusted based on the groups’ interests):

- Charting the space of Exertion Interfaces: What are the axes that define this domain? What areas have yet to be explored?

- Evaluation of physical interfaces and their social effects: how?

- Ideas for future projects

DISCUSSION

Time: 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

After the group activity, participants will match up in different groups and discuss the previous outcomes.

DEMONSTRATIONS

Time: 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Research demonstrations of working systems by the participants.

BREAK

Time: 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

WRAP-UP

Time: 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Outcome possibilities with follow-up actions will be discussed, both with regard to possible journal publications etc. and to the problem-solution matches. This session will also produce the workshop’s poster for the evening poster session.

SPORTS

Time: 5:30 – open ended (voluntary)

The organizers will examine the surroundings of the conference venue to identify opportunities for a sport activity as final teambuilding event, e.g. basketball, volleyball, table tennis, jogging.

AFTER THE WORKSHOP

The following are the after-workshop activities planned:

- A summary of the workshop's activities and findings will be submitted for publication in ACM interactions or for the SIGCHI Bulletin.

- If there is sufficient interest, attendees from the workshop will form a follow-up collaboration to write a paper on the state of the art research. The workshop organizers will lead this effort.

- In addition, it is hoped that matches made during the workshop will result in follow-up collaborative projects, especially because many prototypes created thus far support social experiences between participants over a distance, but these have often not been tested in locations other than where they developed.
